The Sikh Society wishes you all a Happy New Year and hope you enjoyed your Holidays!

Talk of the Month
So just before you all go home for the Christmas Holidays you may be planning on one last party? A trip down to Broad Street maybe?
One last session?... How about making a trip down the chaplaincy (its not that far, just behind the guild and you wont even need to get a taxi there)... where there will be a garantee of buzz that will keep you
boosted for longer than you expect, it all depends on you!

Following on the success of previous weeks, the famous Sikhi Weeks of the West Midlands is back and boy is it going to be bigger then ever! With, inspirational talks, a Candle Light Vigil, National Youth Kirtan Darbar, and Paintball Massacre this week promises to be the best yet. A very inspirational talk on the power of Gurbani. On how our Guru Sahibs: Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur. And countless Shaheeds such as Bhai Mani Singh and those mothers who had there children cut into pieces and garlands placed around there necks. How the Power of Gurbani helped them and gave them strength to endure physical torture and death.

As an act of remembrance, the Sikh community will be holding acandlelit vigil to remember the dark days in history during the Anti-Sikh Pogroms with killing of thousands of innocent Sikhs across India from the 80's until the present. To this date even after the findings of the latest commission, no onehas been prosecuted for the organisation of this horror and 24 yearson the Sikh's still await justice. Join us to light a candle of hopeand say a prayer for all those souls awaiting peace.

The year 2008 is the commemorating the 300th year that the Guru Granth Sahib Ji has been our eternal GURU JI
300 years....seems like a long time doesnt it? But if you think about it, you will soon realise that its NOT!! At the end of the day 300 years is only a few generations.....
The questions we have got to ask ourselves TODAY is...
Would GURU JI be pleased to see me doing what i am doing today?Am i leading the life that MY GURU wanted me to lead?
Did the martrys of the SIkh relgion SACRIFICE their yesterday for our tomorrow for nothing?
The following happend to the SIKHS only a few centuries ago:
-WE WERE BRICKED ALIVE-WE WE WERE BURNT ALIVE
-WE WERE SAWN ALIVE
-WE WERE CHOPPED ALIVE
-OUR MOTHERS WORE THE NECKLACES OF THEIR TORN BABIES AROUND THEIR NECKS
-WE WERE BEHEADED
-WE WERE FLUNG IN BOILING COULDRONS
-WE WERE PUT ON THE WHEELS OF DEATH
-WE HAD PRICES PUT ON OUR HEADS AND WERE HUNTED FOR THEM
BUT yet......
We NEVER deserted our Guru
We NEVER lost Faith
BUT WHY? ...THE GURU'S KHALSA WAS NOT AFRAID OF DEATH. INSTEAD, DEATH WAS AFRAID OF THE KHALSA!!Looking back at our YOUNG HISTORY, we have got to ask ourselves....
"ARE WE TODAY THE MYTH, WHEN WE THEN LIVED AND DIED FOR THE TRUTH???"Please do make every effort to come to this event, if the GURU's and Shaheeds can give up THEIR LIVES for us to be here today......Can we not give up 1 hour of our time to listen, to learn to find out more about our religion....

Simran and Paintballing Event
First of all thank you to everyone who made an effort to come to the SODA n SAMOSA event last wednesday, we do hope you enjoyed eating all those samosa.
OUR next event will be a SIMRAN SESSION led by Bhai Manvir Singh, for those of you who dont know what SIMRAN is this would be a great opportunity for you to find out what it is, what is the importance of it and why it is so good for your soul. If there is anyone out there who is already beginning to feel the stress of UNI LIFE, then this is the perfect opportunity for you to learn how to de-stress your self aswell as spiritually awaken yourself!

Come and join us for the Birmingham Uni Sikh Soc Kirtan Darbar on Campus. Kirtanias such as Bhaji Sukhwinder Singh and Bhaji Manvir Singh will be attending.
